Describing a movie as great and interesting is subjective. To deduce from the all time famous quote, “one man’s food is another man’s poison” can strongly play out when viewers are asked to describe what they have just watched. While some might think of it as breath-taking and brilliantly entertaining. Some might find it impossible to identify any sort of interest or connection with the movie. Still, it doesn’t make such movie good or bad, neither does it make it any less of a movie. However, some movies are made to go against all odds, they can be identified as “regardless”. What this means is that irrespective of the viewer, irrespective of the type of audience, such movies will always be rated high, it forms a general opinion as a “great movie” that every viewer will be able to attest to.

Charge and bail, an upcoming Nigerian comedy-drama film directed by Niyi Towolawi and co-produced by Eku Edewor and Matilda Ogunleye, features talented Nollywood stars such as Zainab Balogun, Stan Nze, Femi Adebayo, Folu Storms, Tope Olowoniyan, and Eso Dike in supporting roles.

The film tells the story of Boma, a high-flying lawyer from the upper class who finds herself posted to a charge and bail law firm during her NYSC year. Trouble ensues as Boma struggles to fit in with the people, the court, and new life. Charge and Bail is a fun adventure about the clash between the have’s and the have-nots and having to deal with finding your place in an environment that is new to you.

This movie breaks the Nollywood Stereotype of female toxicity which of course was the first thing of major interest to me. Two best friends in the same career having to go against each other which was literally a competition, and still support, love and care for each other is not what we see too often in Nollywood movies. However, contrary to viewers prediction, Charge and Bail decided to change the narrative and gave to us something freakishly mature, entertaining and beautiful. Making a simple, yet firm point, “the sky is big enough for everyone to soar”.

Charge and bail is a meal, a delicious one at that. You can literally taste the professionalism, distinct story line, beautiful acting and brilliant story telling of the makers of this movie. It shows that conscious effort was put into making the movie from start to finish. There was a deliberate plan to want to make a good movie and it was made. The acting delivered by Zainab Balogun and Folu Storm was quite impeccable. The latter isn’t one we see very often on our screens. However, she delivered a beautiful Northern young lady in grand style.

The attention to detail in Charge and Bail cannot be missed. I particularly love how the concept of “culture shock” was painted for Boma [Zainab Balogun] who had an already successful law career abroad and had to prove herself and her capability in Nigeria as a youth corper.

Her new reality was a rather difficult one, considering the Nigerian system. This was quite entertaining and definitely had key takeouts such as hope, determination, hardwork and skill.

Meanwhile, it will take nothing less than 5 minutes for this movie to convince you to rest your back and give it a chance. Will you regret it? That of course is a no.

Charge and Bail falls under the “new Nollywood narrative”, fresh story line and beautiful delivery. You don’t feel like you are watching a movie twice or even 5 times with different characters and a different title. It is a fresh out the oven movie, bearing it own sweetness and enjoyment.
