According to Alyssa Maio, comedy is mostly subjective. He defined comedy to be any work that is intended to incite laughter and amusement, especially in theatre, television, film, stand-up comedy, or any other entertainment medium. The tone is always light and satirical and the story always ends well.

The movie Crazy Grannies ticked the majority of the boxes of what a comedy movie should entail, but still had very obvious loopholes. Crazy Grannies explores the adventures of three grannies. In a bid to relive their youthful days and rediscover themselves, due to a health scare, three women (Omodele, Ere, and Cheta, childhood friends with very different personalities) take a trip to a resort, where they have the adventures of their lives! However, things get more interesting as one of them finds love again.

Written by Joy Elumelu, the film boasts of stars like Shaffy Bello, Ngozi Nwosu, Princess Damilola (Princess comedienne), Bolanle Ninalowo, Mercy Aigbe, Debo Adebayo(Mr. Macaroni), Jimmy Odukoya, Onyebuchi Ojieh known as Buchi comedian, Bayray Mcnwizu, Chinonso Arubayi, and Abazie Rosemary.

While comedy is completely subjective, there are a few obvious techniques that a comedy movie must have. The timing which entails how the characters deliver the punch line, or how actors deliver their lines, can affect the way the audience responds. Just one small pause can enhance a joke. Good timing builds anticipation and then delivers. The characters in this movie made sure to take advantage of the timing rule of comedy but didn’t use it effectively with their lines. It seemed as though these characters didn’t know when to slam the brakes and just kept going till the acting and humor became exaggerated.

Though there is the expectation rule of comedy, it is a situation where what is expected to happen, happens. We see it coming. And it’s still funny. However, it is safe to say that even though all the lines and actions in this movie were so predictable, they still had a humorous effect on the majority of the audience in the theater.

Crazy Grannies is simply a safe movie, the makers of this movie chose comedy, and all the effort and actions of the characters were solely directed at achieving humor and nothing less. It was left for the audience to select what they wanted to laugh about and leave the rest for other people to also make their pick. So a viewer can find few scenes funny or every scene at best, and it is also possible for another viewer to find nothing humor worthy in the movie. After all, comedy is subjective. Meanwhile, it is also almost impossible to write off Crazy Grannies as a bad movie irrespective of whatever you can make of the movie.

The themes of comedy movies depend on the plot of the movie. A big theme in comedy movies is happy endings. That’s the only real way a comedy movie can end, otherwise, it isn’t a comedy movie. Despite all the swings in Crazy Grannies, it did well to have a happy ending which of course was the safest landing to give the movie.

This movie had great camera angles, movement, composition lighting, and colour which made the movie more entertaining and interesting for the sight. All in all, Crazy Grannies isn’t the best of movies neither is it mind-blowing. However, this movie dishes different extents of entertainment for different viewers and one can be certain to get a fair share.
