Pastor Tobi Adegboyega calls Davido gospel artiste, stirs debate online

Pastor Tobi Adegboyega, founder of SPAC Nation, has caused a stir by labeling Nigerian music icon Davido a gospel artiste, sparking a heated discussion on the relationship between gospel and secular music.

During an appearance on the Off The Record podcast, Adegboyega explained that the word “gospel,” meaning “good news,” could apply to any artist whose music carries a positive message, including Davido.

“Gospel means good news. Everyone there is a gospel artiste. Davido is a gospel artiste,” Adegboyega stated, citing Davido’s song, “Because I Stand Strong,” as a powerful example of the artist’s uplifting message.

The pastor’s comments come amid backlash for inviting secular musicians, such as Davido and Zlatan, to perform at his birthday celebration instead of traditional gospel singers.

Adegboyega, however, stood firm in his belief, saying, “It’s my friends that will be there. Everyone in that room was my friend,” dismissing criticism from those questioning the presence of secular music at a spiritual event.

He further emphasized that his personal relationships with these artists take precedence over external judgment, declaring, “Zlatan is like a son to me… I’ll always give my friends a platform, and my circle will keep growing.”

Adegboyega’s remarks have ignited a broader conversation about the boundaries between gospel and secular music and the role of personal connections in shaping public events.
