It started like something out of a James Hadley Chase’s novel; a work of fiction with its attendant investigation and suspense. Only that this time around Emem Isong hits home when Nigerians are tagged criminals abroad.
Hold on though, it’s not all gloomy. Special Jollof is a story of love, revenge, passion and betrayal thrown into one.
The movie highlights the journey of an American journalist in a quest for revenge on anything with a Nigerian tag on it! Why does she detest a country so much?
In an attempt to pin immigration frauds against Nigerians, she goes undercover. But while fishing for crime, her bait lured love and she finds it hard pulling out.
Even though the storyline isn’t really extraordinary, a movie enthusiast will enjoy every moment spent at the cinema as every other ingredients of a good movie production make up for a not-so-exciting script.
This latest work from Emem Isong and written by Rita Onwurah, shot in the United States and Nigeria, parades stars such as Joseph Benjamin, Uche Jombo, Bukky Wright, Femi Adebayo, Chiwetalu Agu and Destiny Etiko amongst others.
Isong is an award winning filmmaker with great works to her credits, but her latest offering is more of muscle flexing because I couldn’t find what is special in the jollof.
