Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, explains Afrobeats is for escapism in Nigeria. She believes the genre serves as an escape from harsh realities rather than a medium to address societal ills.
Tems shared this perspective while responding to Jamaican reggae legend Buju Banton’s criticism of Afrobeats on a recent episode of the ‘Shopping The Sneakers’ podcast.
Buju Banton claimed that Afrobeats lacks substance and would fade over time. In reaction, Tems said, “I understand where Buju Banton is coming from. Reggae is not Afrobeats, and Afrobeats in Nigeria is specifically for escapism; that’s the purpose of Afrobeats.” She emphasised that the genres have different roles and purposes within their respective cultures.
Tems, known for her hit ‘Love Me Jeje’, suggests that Afrobeats provides listeners with a break from everyday challenges. By highlighting the genre’s role in offering joy and relief, she underscores its significance in Nigerian society. Her comments shed light on the cultural context of Afrobeats and its place in contemporary music.
