Police Probe Death of OAU Final-Year Student

The Nigeria Police Force has commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Oluwole Oluwaseun, a final-year student of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State.

Oluwaseun was a student of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. The university said it received information about an emergency involving him at an apartment in the Damico Area of Ooni Layout, Ile-Ife, at about 1:30pm on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.

Following the report, the university’s Quick Response and Security Team proceeded to the location, while officers from the ‘A’ Division of the Nigeria Police Force, Moore, Ile-Ife, were contacted and joined the university security personnel at the scene.

The student was subsequently taken to the university’s Health Centre, where a medical doctor certified him dead.

The university said it was deeply concerned about the circumstances surrounding the death and had handed relevant information and items recovered from the scene to the police to assist with the investigation.

Some reports have described the incident as a suspected suicide. However, the university’s official statement did not conclusively establish the cause of death and urged members of the university community to avoid spreading unverified information or speculation while the investigation continues.

The university also notified the appropriate student affairs authorities to provide necessary welfare and support to students affected by the incident.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Simeon Bamire, expressed condolences to Oluwaseun’s family, friends, classmates and colleagues, while expressing concern for members of the university community who may be emotionally affected by the tragedy.

The university urged students experiencing severe emotional distress, relationship difficulties, financial pressures or other personal challenges to seek support from trusted people and appropriate university structures.

Management said the police investigation was ongoing and that further information would be communicated through official channels where necessary.
