Nollywood actor Uzor Arukwe has explained why he is not a strong advocate of marriage, arguing that women often bear more of its responsibilities and sacrifices than men.

The actor made the remarks during an interview, where he highlighted the physical and social expectations placed on women, particularly regarding childbirth, family life and the tradition of taking their husbands’ surnames.

According to Arukwe, these responsibilities make marriage more demanding for women, especially in a society where people often expect them to marry and have children by a certain age.

“I’ve never really been an advocate of marriage, because I feel like it’s more tasking for the woman. She’s the one that bears the child. She takes your last name. A lot of things happen,” he said.

The actor also reflected on the pressure young adults face over their marital status, noting that people may begin questioning them when they reach their mid-twenties without getting married.

“Growing up, you’re 25, you’re not married. What’s happening?” he asked.

Arukwe further spoke about changing attitudes towards parenthood, saying he had met women who did not want to have children.

“At this age, I already have five children. I feel like now, there are women who don’t want to even have children. I’ve met at least two or three,” he stated.

His comments have brought attention to discussions around gender roles, the expectations attached to marriage and the different choices people make about having children.
