African Air Forces Deepen Cooperation for Continental Security

The Association of African Air Forces has intensified efforts to strengthen cooperation among the continent’s air forces and improve their collective response to emerging security threats.

The development followed a high-level planning conference held from August 31 to September 4, 2026, at Ramstein Air Base in Germany, where African air force representatives and international partners discussed ways to make the Association of African Air Forces a more effective, sustainable and responsive platform.

The conference brought together members of the association’s Permanent Secretariat, planners for the AAAF Exercise 2027, liaison officers, working-group representatives and subject-matter experts.

Representatives of the System of Cooperation Among the American Air Forces, known as SICOFAA, and the United States Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa also participated in the discussions.

The meeting focused on strengthening institutional continuity within the African air forces association while improving strategic engagement and practical cooperation among member countries.

Participants also examined preparations for AAAF Exercise 2027, an initiative intended to provide opportunities for participating air forces to improve interoperability, coordination and their ability to respond collectively to security challenges.

The push for closer cooperation comes as African countries continue to confront a range of security threats requiring air capabilities, including terrorism, insurgency, transnational criminal activity and other threats that can cross national borders.

For the African Air Forces, greater cooperation is intended to make it easier to share experience, strengthen planning and develop common approaches to air operations and other security challenges.

The conference also placed emphasis on the long-term development of the Association of African Air Forces rather than limiting its activities to individual meetings or exercises.

The association said the discussions represented significant progress towards strengthening continental airpower cooperation, institutional continuity and strategic engagement.

The involvement of SICOFAA and USAFE-AFAFRICA also provided an opportunity for African air forces to draw on international experience in areas including cooperation, planning and professional military engagement.

The Ramstein meeting formed part of broader efforts to establish a more sustainable framework through which African air forces can work together and develop their collective capabilities.

The conference therefore signals a renewed emphasis on building an African-led platform capable of supporting cooperation between air forces while responding more effectively to the continent’s evolving security environment.
