The actor, best known for roles in Band of Brothers, Desperate Housewives, and Yellowstone, said he refused to kiss any actress on screen out of respect for his marriage.

The Neal McDonough no-kissing rule wasn’t initially an industry issue, but as he began turning down roles involving romantic scenes, the rejections piled up.

I always had in my contracts that I wouldn’t kiss another woman on screen. My wife didn’t have any problem with it. It was me, really, who had a problem.

He said the shift came when he and his wife were starting a family, and he decided that maintaining his personal values was more important than fame.

The actor revealed that his decision led to the loss of significant roles—and nearly everything else:

“They wouldn’t let me be part of the show anymore. And for two years, I couldn’t get a job. I lost everything you could possibly imagine—houses, material things, your swagger, your cool, your identity, everything.”

Despite the toll it took on his finances and reputation, McDonough stood firm in his belief that faith and family come first.
