NFVCB Launches Inspiring Masterclass for Nigerian Filmmakers with training on legal issues, monetisation and production standards in the digital era

The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has launched a new masterclass series for Nigerian filmmakers and creative industry stakeholders, bringing together leading professionals to strengthen skills, improve production standards and support sustainable growth in the digital era.

The maiden NFVCB Launches Inspiring Masterclass for Nigerian Filmmakers programme was held at the Agip Hall of the MUSON Centre in Lagos, attracting filmmakers and industry practitioners for specialised sessions on legal issues in filmmaking, content monetisation and production best practices.

The initiative was organised in partnership with CcHUB and Ojis Production Studios Limited, with facilitators including veteran filmmaker and curator Dr Femi Odugbemi, entertainment lawyer Sandra Oyewole and media executive Adetutu Laditan.

In his welcome address, NFVCB Executive Director Dr Shaibu Husseini described the programme as a strategic investment in people and the future of Nigeria’s creative sector.

“This Masterclass therefore represents an investment in people. Indeed, for us at NFVCB, this event is not just an investment in knowledge but we consider it more as an investment in the future of Nigeria’s creative industry,” Husseini said.

Husseini explained that the masterclass was developed following feedback from participants at the 5th PAO Nigerian Digital Regulatory Conference held in November 2025.

Participants at that event had called for more practical engagement on issues affecting filmmakers and content creators.

“This marks an important milestone in the Board’s continuing commitment to the growth and professional development of Nigeria’s film and audiovisual industry,” he said.

The programme received strong support from industry figures, including veteran actress Joke Silva, who attended as special guest and spoke on professionalism, innovation and sustainability as key pillars for the future of Nigerian entertainment.

Silva emphasised that professionalism helps transform creative talent into a trusted and commercially successful industry.

She highlighted the importance of honouring contracts, meeting production timelines, maintaining transparent financial practices, protecting intellectual property rights and strengthening professional associations.

A major highlight of the training was Dr Femi Odugbemi’s session on production standards and best practices. He encouraged filmmakers to focus on accountability, capacity building and skills development as essential tools for competing in an increasingly digital global marketplace.

“Everything is possible if one is smart and fast enough to move,” Odugbemi said during the session.

The masterclass also addressed the growing need for filmmakers to understand revenue opportunities in digital distribution, legal protection and sustainable production models as Nigeria’s film industry continues to expand internationally.

The event was attended by several notable industry personalities, including Victor Okhai, Dayo Amusa, Femi Durojaiye and Toyin Alausa, alongside emerging filmmakers seeking practical knowledge to improve their craft.
