Oby Kechere’s passing has been confirmed, with Nollywood actress and Aki na Ukwa star reported dead after a prolonged illness, according to the Directors Guild of Nigeria

Nollywood actress and filmmaker Oby Kechere has died after a prolonged illness, with the news confirmed by the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN) in an official statement released on Friday via its Instagram page.

The announcement revealed that she passed away on Monday, April 27, 2026, leaving colleagues and members of the creative industry in mourning.

According to the statement signed by DGN National President Uche Agbo, Oby Kechere, also known as Madam Cecilia Oby Kechere, served as Vice Chairman of the DGN Abuja Chapter and was recognised for her commitment to the growth and unity of the guild.

The guild described her as a dedicated professional whose contributions to the Nigerian film industry and the Abuja Chapter would remain deeply valued and remembered.

Oby Kechere was widely known for her role in the popular Nollywood comedy film Aki na Ukwa, where she portrayed the character Ms Koi Koi, earning recognition in the early 2000s.

Beyond that role, she featured in several other productions including GSM Wahala, American Husband, August Meeting, Gone Forever, Ekete, and Safe Journey, showcasing her versatility as both an actress and director.

Her career spanned acting and behind-the-scenes contributions, making her a respected figure within the Nollywood industry.

Tributes have continued to pour in from colleagues and industry stakeholders, many of whom described her passing as a significant loss to the creative sector.
