Timaya speaks out about the lack of goodwill in the Nigerian music industry, explaining why colleagues aren’t necessarily friends or supportive.

Renowned Nigerian singer Inetimi Alfred Odom, popularly known as Timaya, has highlighted the competitive nature of the Nigerian music industry, stating that goodwill among colleagues is rare.

Speaking in an interview with Channels TV, Timaya shared his candid views on the dynamics between artists, suggesting that competition and self-interest are prevalent in the industry.

“Your colleagues are not your friends,” Timaya remarked, adding that true support comes only from family. He compared the industry’s collaborations to business partnerships rather than friendships, noting,

“If Adidas can collaborate with Gucci, then what are you talking about? Collaboration, I said it a long time ago, ‘collabo follow for promo.’”

Timaya shared that securing collaborations often comes at a cost, with some artists charging fees for features or failing to show up for video shoots.

“Those things are killing the music and creativity,” he explained, attributing the lack of collaboration to a shift in industry values.

He expressed frustration over the challenges in maintaining a supportive network, observing, “There has never been love in the music industry; it’s just like in an office… there’s competition.”

Reflecting on the industry’s evolution, Timaya suggested that the shift away from a collaborative spirit is inevitable, with new dynamics replacing the “old ways.”

His remarks underscore a call for understanding the industry’s competitive nature while maintaining professionalism and focus on personal growth.
