Chris Rock Declines hosting 2024 Golden Globes after Oscars Clap

Published

on

The 2024 Golden Globes may be facing a hosting crisis, as A-listers Chris Rock, Ali Wong, and the “Smartless” podcast trio of Will Arnett, Sean Hayes, and Jason Bateman have all reportedly declined the offer to helm the Hollywood ceremony. Rock’s decision, following the infamous Oscars slap incident where Will Smith took to the stage in response to a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s alopecia, comes as no surprise.

Wong, a comedian and actress known for her outspoken humor, was also approached but ultimately declined the gig. Similarly, the “Smartless” co-hosts, known for their chemistry and comedic timing, have also passed on the opportunity.

The Golden Globes, historically a star-studded event, has faced declining viewership and controversy in recent years, including accusations of ethical lapses and a lack of diversity within the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the organization behind the awards. This has led to many actors and studios boycotting the ceremony in recent years.

While Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, who have successfully co-hosted the Globes four times in the past, remain a possibility, a source close to the duo told CNN, “They would never do it (again). They’re done.”

The reasons for the A-list rejections are varied, according to industry insiders. Some cite the thankless nature of the job, with its long hours, demanding expectations, and potential for negative publicity. Others point to the “politics” involved and the pressure to please both the HFPA and the Hollywood audience.

Regardless of the specific reasons, the lack of interest from major stars raises questions about the future of the Golden Globes. Can the ceremony, once a prestigious and highly anticipated event, regain its footing without the participation of Hollywood’s top talent? Only time will tell.
