Speed Darlington release

Speed Darlington, the controversial Nigerian singer, is finally free from Kuje Prison after a court order challenged his prolonged detention.

Controversial Nigerian musician Darlington Okoye, better known as Speed Darlington or Akpi, has regained his freedom after a turbulent legal battle.

The singer was released from Kuje Prison following a court order demanding his immediate arraignment or unconditional release.

Activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju disclosed the news on Tuesday, posting on X (formerly Twitter): “Speed Darlington is out of Kuje Prison.”

Darlington’s release comes after an Abuja court granted him bail. The court ruling followed increasing public and legal pressure on the Nigeria Police Force, which had been criticised for detaining the singer without trial.

The musician’s legal troubles began after he accused Grammy Award-winning Nigerian singer Burna Boy of an immoral relationship with American rapper and music mogul Sean Combs, also known as P. Diddy. His comments, widely circulated online, sparked significant controversy, leading to his arrest.

Darlington’s legal team, led by Adeyanju, petitioned Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) Dasuki Galadanchi, urging the police to adhere to a court order addressing the prolonged detention.

Justice M.S. Liman, in an order issued on 23 December 2024, directed the authorities to either charge Darlington in court within 48 hours or release him unconditionally.
