Jim Iyke discusses parenting, saying boys benefit from both parents and sharing how he handled a bullying incident involving his son

Nollywood actor Jim Iyke has argued that children, particularly boys, benefit from the presence and influence of both parents, saying mothers and fathers contribute differently to a child’s development.

Jim Iyke made the remarks during an appearance on the Lahor Podcast, where he discussed parenting, fatherhood and the lessons children learn while growing up.

The actor rejected the idea that either parent can independently provide every experience a child needs to become well-rounded.

“No woman alive alone can raise a full man. No man alive alone can raise a full man. You need both,” Iyke said.

His comments centred particularly on the role of fathers in raising boys and the ways children learn resilience, independence and how to respond to difficult situations.

Iyke argued that the absence of a father figure could leave some boys without certain experiences that help shape their understanding of self-reliance and resilience.

The actor illustrated his point with an experience involving his own son during a family trip to France.

Iyke recalled that his son was bullied by other children at a beach and later returned to tell his father what had happened.

Rather than immediately intervening, Iyke said he deliberately allowed his son to confront the situation himself.

“At a beach in France, my son was bullied by other kids. He came to report to me, but I did nothing,” he said.

According to Iyke, his son eventually returned to the other children, confronted them and reclaimed his ball.

“He went back, fought them and took his ball back. That’s how boys learn,” he added.

The anecdote reflects Iyke’s broader parenting philosophy, which appears to emphasise allowing children to face age-appropriate challenges rather than having parents solve every problem on their behalf.

His position has also opened up a familiar debate around single parenting and the different ways mothers and fathers influence children’s development.

While Iyke presented a two-parent household as important, parenting experts and family researchers have long noted that children’s wellbeing is influenced by several factors beyond household structure, including the quality of caregiving, stability, emotional support and the wider environment in which a child grows.

Single parents can and do raise healthy, resilient and successful children, although they may face additional practical and financial pressures.

Iyke’s comments should therefore be understood as his personal view on parenting rather than a universal assessment of single-parent families.

The actor’s remarks also highlight a distinction between protecting children and preparing them to handle challenges.

For Iyke, allowing his son to work through a minor confrontation was an opportunity for the child to develop confidence and independence.

At the heart of his argument is the belief that parenting involves more than providing comfort and protection.

It also involves preparing children to navigate difficult situations as they become increasingly independent.
