Mary Njoku says some men feel threatened by successful wives, blaming ego and insecurity for tension when women earn more than their husbands

Nollywood actress Mary Remmy Njoku has warned that ego and insecurity can create tension in marriages when women become more financially successful than their husbands.

Njoku made the observation on Monday, August 31, 2026, in an Instagram post discussing the challenges that can arise when a wife begins earning significantly more than her husband.

The actress said many women tend to celebrate their husbands’ financial success because they see the achievement as a benefit to the family.

However, she argued that some men may struggle when the financial roles are reversed, particularly when their wives begin to earn substantially more.

“When the woman starts earning significantly more, some men begin to feel emasculated, inadequate, or disrespected. Even when she has done absolutely nothing to make them feel that way,” Njoku wrote.

According to her, the woman’s higher income can subsequently become a source of conflict, with ordinary disagreements sometimes being attributed to the difference in earnings.

“Suddenly, every little disagreement becomes, ‘It’s because you have money more than me.’ And that’s the real issue,” she said.

Njoku suggested that the underlying challenge is often not the woman’s success but the insecurity a man may feel about his position within the relationship.

She maintained that a wife’s achievements should not make her husband feel inferior, arguing that healthy partnerships should allow both people to celebrate each other’s progress.

The actress also stressed that marriage should not become a competition over income, status or achievement, particularly when both partners can benefit from each other’s success.

Her comments have added to an ongoing conversation about changing financial dynamics in modern relationships and the pressures couples can face when traditional expectations around gender and income are reversed.
