Mo Abudu UK cinema hub will open in London, bringing African and Black films, food, fashion, art and culture to Wandsworth Road

Nigerian media entrepreneur Mosunmola Abudu, popularly known as Mo Abudu, has announced that EbonyLife Place London will open in October 2026 at 208 Wandsworth Road, London, creating what she describes as the United Kingdom’s first cinema hub dedicated exclusively to African and Black films.

Abudu shared the announcement on Monday, August 10, alongside a video showing the London property as preparations continue ahead of the opening.

The project represents a major step in Abudu’s effort to take African storytelling and entertainment into a wider international market, extending the EbonyLife Place concept beyond its established base in Lagos.

“EbonyLife Place London will become the first cinema in the United Kingdom dedicated exclusively to African and Black films, while also creating a vibrant cultural hub celebrating our fashion, music, food and art,” Abudu said.

The venue is designed to offer visitors more than film screenings. Abudu said the space will include the Grand Reception, The Afrobeat Restaurant, Fèhintì Lounge, Maji Concession & Bar, Zuri Retail and The Living Wall Gallery.

Planning documents from Lambeth Council confirm that the Wandsworth Road property is being developed as a cultural centre with theatre and cinema space, alongside a café or restaurant, bar, retail facilities and an exhibition area.

The development has been progressing through the planning process since 2025. Lambeth Council granted permission for the change of use of parts of the building to accommodate the cultural centre and its supporting facilities.

The venue’s address is also now reflected in UK corporate records for EbonyLife Place CIC and EbonyLife Cinemas & Entertainment Limited, both of which list 208 Wandsworth Road as their correspondence address.

The London project builds on the EbonyLife Place model established by Abudu in Lagos. The original venue, located in Victoria Island, combines cinemas, restaurants, event spaces and hospitality facilities, positioning entertainment as part of a broader lifestyle experience.

Abudu has also built a wider creative business around EbonyLife, including EbonyLife Media, EbonyLife Films, EbonyLife Studios and EbonyLife Creative Academy.

Her work has helped connect Nigerian film and television projects with international audiences and partners.

Forbes describes her as the founder of EbonyLife Media and one of the most prominent figures in global African media.

The London expansion comes at a time when African cinema and television are gaining greater international visibility, with streaming platforms and global distributors increasingly investing in African stories and talent.

Abudu has previously spoken about the importance of strengthening links between African creatives and international markets. In a recent post, she described the London project as part of a broader opportunity for UK-Africa creative collaboration.

The new venue is expected to provide a dedicated physical space where audiences in London can encounter African and Black cinema alongside other elements of African culture.

For filmmakers, the significance could extend beyond screenings. A permanent venue focused on African stories can provide another route for films to reach diaspora audiences and create opportunities for cultural events, exhibitions, live performances and creative networking.

The project is therefore not simply an expansion of a cinema brand. It is an ambitious attempt to create a permanent meeting point for African film, food, fashion, music and art in the British capital.

With the October opening approaching, attention will now turn to the programme of films and cultural events that EbonyLife Place London will present when the doors officially open.
