Mary Remmy Njoku criticises clout culture in Nollywood, urging young creatives to focus on hard work and problem-solving for lasting success

Nollywood actress, filmmaker, and CEO of ROK Studios, Mary Remmy Njoku, has criticised the current trend in the entertainment industry where many creatives gain fame by doing “something stupid or crazy” rather than through genuine hard work.

Speaking during a panel at NECLive 2025, Njoku reflected on her journey from actress to media entrepreneur, highlighting that her wealth and influence came from solving problems in the creative industry rather than chasing temporary attention.

“I got rich by solving problems. If you want to blow right now, you can’t blow by doing good. You have to do something stupid or crazy. And it’s not fair on the very few people that are doing good,” she said.

Njoku, who founded ROK TV channels and established one of Africa’s most influential film studios, urged young creatives not to be discouraged by the wave of sensationalism dominating social media.

She encouraged them to use any attention gained to promote positive impact rather than seeking fleeting clout.
