Timini Egbuson borrowed to fund luxury lifestyle, the actor reveals, reflecting on debt, peer pressure and lessons on financial priorities

Timini Egbuson, Nigerian actor and filmmaker, has revealed that he once borrowed money to sustain an extravagant lifestyle, admitting that the pressure to maintain a luxury image eventually forced him to rethink his financial priorities.

Speaking on a recent episode of the MENtality podcast, Timini Egbuson said he previously took loans to finance expensive fashion purchases and other luxury items before realising that lasting fulfilment was more important than keeping up appearances.

“There will always be a newer watch, a newer car. I used to be a perfume collector. I had about 150. But I realised that I could have invested the money I spent acquiring perfumes in purchasing land,” the actor said.

Timini Egbuson stressed that owning luxury items is not inherently wrong but encouraged people to examine the motivation behind such purchases.

“I’m not trying to talk down on having a nice car or watch. But are you doing it for yourself or because of peer pressure? Are you genuinely happy with it? And without it, would you still be happy?” he asked.

The candid admission offers a rare insight into the financial pressures faced by some public figures, particularly in an era when social media often amplifies expectations around wealth and success.

His reflections also highlight a broader conversation about responsible spending and the impact of lifestyle inflation.

Timini Egbuson went on to speak about maintaining a positive outlook despite financial setbacks, saying genuine happiness should not depend on material possessions.

“There are times when I have been broke, but my energy is always the same because I found a way to be happy with whatever I have,” he said. “I used to be that guy who lived a fake life and borrowed to impress people. But not anymore.”

The actor has previously spoken publicly about issues including money, mental health and relationships, using interviews and podcasts to discuss the realities behind life in the entertainment industry.
