Nollywood actor Yomi Fabiyi faces public backlash after defending Baba Ijesha in controversial 2021 sexual assault case

During the broadcast, Fabiyi claimed that the 2021 incident involving Baba Ijesha and the 14-year-old foster daughter of comedienne Damilola Adekoya, professionally known as Princess, was a matter of “play” rather than a criminal sexual assault.

Speaking in Yoruba, Fabiyi asserted that Baba Ijesha had no intent to rape the minor.

“There was no intention to rape. Baba Ijesha just wanted to play with the girl and kiss her quickly because he knew the homeowner would be back soon. He just wanted to kiss the girl and play with her breasts,” Fabiyi said.

He further condemned what he described as “selective justice and abuse of fundamental rights.”

The sexual assault case, which attracted national attention, was documented on CCTV and provided key evidence that led to Baba Ijesha’s conviction.

Legal experts and advocacy groups swiftly condemned Fabiyi’s remarks, describing them as insensitive and minimising the severity of the crime.

Social media reactions were immediate and strongly critical, with users questioning the actor’s judgement and highlighting the importance of protecting victims’ rights.

Many argued that public figures have a responsibility to avoid statements that could undermine justice or public trust in the legal system.

Industry observers noted that Fabiyi’s defence, likely motivated by personal connections, has reignited debates over ethics, accountability, and the role of celebrities in legal commentary.
