The award-winning filmmaker, who recently lost her mother, said organising a burial in the East can be emotionally and physically draining for grieving families already dealing with loss.

Chinney Love stated that the process often worsens emotional distress, adding that families are sometimes pushed to their limits during a vulnerable period.

She questioned why burial ceremonies are often complicated by disputes and displays of power, which she said make the experience more difficult for bereaved children.

The filmmaker described the situation as exhausting and emotionally heavy, noting that she feels sick, frustrated, and overwhelmed by her personal experience.

She further suggested that the pressure surrounding traditional burial ceremonies may discourage some families from returning their loved ones’ bodies to their hometowns.

Chinney Love said people should not have to endure additional stress while grieving, stressing that the focus should be on honouring the deceased rather than enduring unnecessary pressure.

The filmmaker recently announced the passing of her mother and has been publicly sharing her grief journey, including reflections on her mother’s posthumous birthday.
