The Nollywood actress triggers heated debate online after linking domestic violence trends to Igbo men, drawing strong reactions from social media users

Nollywood actress Gina Onuoha has sparked widespread controversy after making remarks on social media linking recurring cases of domestic violence and family-related issues to Igbo men, a statement that has since triggered intense debate across online platforms.

Gina Onuoha made the comments in a viral post that questioned behavioural patterns within the Igbo community, suggesting that incidents of domestic violence frequently trending online were often associated with Igbo men, while also referencing broader issues around child abuse within families.

“To our Igbo men. What is wrong with you? Always trying to prove that you are the head of the family and that your wife must be submissive. Every time a case of domestic violence trends online, it’s an Igbo man,” she stated.

The actress further extended her remarks to include concerns about child abuse, alleging that such cases also appeared repeatedly within certain family contexts, a claim that immediately drew mixed reactions from the public.

Her statement quickly spread across social media, where users expressed divided opinions.

While some individuals supported parts of her concerns regarding domestic violence in Nigeria, many others criticised her for what they described as generalisation and stereotyping of an ethnic group.

The controversy intensified as users engaged in heated exchanges under posts sharing her comments, with some defending her right to speak out on social issues, while others accused her of using sensitive topics to provoke attention and division.

Several commenters also countered her claims by highlighting that domestic violence and child abuse are societal issues that cut across ethnic and cultural boundaries, not confined to any single group.

The discussion has since broadened into a wider conversation about how public figures address sensitive cultural and social issues, especially in a country as diverse as Nigeria, where ethnic identity remains a deeply sensitive subject.
