In a revealing interview on Behind The Fame by African List, Lanre Hassan, widely known as Iya Awero, spoke candidly about how her husband’s support for her acting career turned into control and physical abuse after marriage.

“When we were still dating, he was very happy. He came to rehearsals. But after marriage, he changed. When I came back from acting, he would beat me,” she said.

She emphasized that while their love started on a hopeful note, it ended in trauma and regret.

Despite the abuse, Iya Awero stayed until her husband’s untimely death. The powerful moment in the interview came when she shared her hesitation about remarrying, asking, “Do you know what you’ll meet where you’re going?”
