Nollywood has been thrown into mourning following the death of special effects makeup artist James Akaie, who reportedly died in an accident on a movie set in Abeokuta.

Reports indicate that an explosive device accidentally detonated during filming, causing chaos and panic.

Akaie was fatally injured in the blast, while two assistants working closely with him sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

A production assistant confirmed that the explosion occurred unexpectedly while filming was underway.

Details regarding the type of explosive device or possible breaches of safety protocols remain unclear, and investigations are ongoing.

James Akaie was regarded as one of Nollywood’s rising technical talents.

He gained recognition for his special effects makeup work on Dark October, a production by media entrepreneur Linda Ikeji, which marked a major breakthrough in his career.

Colleagues and industry stakeholders have expressed shock and grief, describing Akaie as passionate, innovative, and deeply committed to his craft.
