Jim Iyke sparks reactions after tipping a car spotter from his Cadillac Escalade, with Nigerians divided over the actor’s gesture

Nollywood actor Jim Iyke has sparked mixed reactions online after a video showed the actor handing cash to a car spotter who approached his Cadillac Escalade on a Nigerian street on Monday, September 7, 2026.

The brief encounter was captured on video and quickly circulated across social media, with viewers offering contrasting interpretations of the actor’s decision to give the young man money.

In the footage, Iyke was seated inside a black Cadillac Escalade when the car spotter approached the vehicle after recognising him.

Rather than ignore the young man, the actor wound down his window and handed him cash before continuing his journey.

The simple gesture soon became a talking point online, with Nigerians divided between those who saw it as an act of kindness and others who questioned the wider implications of celebrities rewarding roadside approaches.

Some social media users argued that giving money to car spotters could encourage a culture of street begging and make it more difficult for public figures to move around freely.

One X user, @OgidiUdama, wrote: “Begging go touch everywhere 😂😂 but lowkey this celeb like these things make dem use am show una say dem dey…. If not Police for don ban am.”

Another user, @Vabu602Abu, took a firmer position, writing: “U don’t give them money u call d police. It has to stop.”

@SamsonU00893272 similarly argued that celebrities could unintentionally contribute to the behaviour by rewarding it, adding: “They promote the begging culture. Tomorrow same celebrities will come online and cry about being harassed.”

Other viewers, however, saw little reason for controversy and interpreted the moment simply as generosity.

@EmaskinOkon described the gesture as an act of generosity and encouragement, while @PriscyJumafan praised Iyke as “very thoughtful” for showing consideration to the young man.

The differing reactions highlight a familiar tension surrounding the growing culture of car spotting and celebrity sightings in Nigeria.

For some celebrities, encounters with fans and car spotters are harmless opportunities to acknowledge people who recognise them.

For others, repeated roadside approaches can raise concerns about privacy, security and unwanted attention.

In Iyke’s case, the actor did not appear to engage in a prolonged interaction. The video showed a brief exchange before he drove away.

The actor’s response has nevertheless generated considerable interest, partly because of the contrast between the luxury SUV and the modest roadside encounter.

Iyke remains one of Nollywood’s most recognisable actors, having built a long-running career through film roles and a prominent public persona.

The viral clip has now offered fans another glimpse of his interaction with members of the public, although the reactions suggest that Nigerians remain divided over where generosity ends and the encouragement of roadside solicitation begins.
