Nollywood actress Rita Edochie has criticised what she described as declining standards in Nigerian politics, arguing that public office is increasingly being sought by individuals without the competence, vision or integrity required for leadership.

In a strongly worded social media post, Rita Edochie expressed concern over what she sees as a deterioration in the political system, claiming that political contests were once subject to stricter evaluation processes and higher standards.

According to the actress, aspiring office holders in the past were expected to demonstrate their suitability before contesting for public positions, regardless of the level of office involved.

“Politics has been badly degraded; anything and everything can now come out to contest, even with nothing to offer,” Rita Edochie wrote.

The actress argued that public office has become accessible to individuals who lack both the capacity and character needed to serve citizens effectively.

Reflecting on what she described as a significant shift in political culture, Rita Edochie questioned when politics became “a dumping ground for people who swim in the pool of illusions”.

Rita Edochie’s political critique comes amid broader conversations about political leadership, governance and electoral participation in Nigeria ahead of future elections.

A notable aspect of her comments was the emphasis on merit and accountability.

Rita Edochie maintained that political aspirants should be subjected to rigorous evaluation before seeking office, a view that has generated discussion among followers and political observers.

Her remarks echo concerns previously raised by music executive Jude Okoye, who advocated making a bachelor’s degree a minimum requirement for those seeking political office.

Jude Okoye argued that it makes little sense for uneducated leaders to govern educated citizens.

The debate has also drawn reactions from social commentator Israel DMW, who recently weighed in on Nigeria’s electoral process.

Israel DMW noted that election outcomes are determined by votes cast rather than social media popularity, while also sharing his personal political preferences ahead of future elections.

Although Rita Edochie’s comments were directed at the broader political landscape, the veteran actress’s observations have reignited discussions about leadership qualifications, governance standards and the qualities required of those seeking public office.
