Charles Olumo Agbako dies at 102

Veteran actor Charles Olumo, famously known as Agbako, has died at 102. Known for his captivating roles in Yoruba films, Agbako’s career spanned over four decades, leaving a lasting impact on Nollywood and fans across Nigeria.

 

 

The Nigerian film industry mourns the loss of one of its legendary actors, Abdulsalam Sanyaolu, popularly known as Charles Olumo and Agbako, who passed away at the age of 102.

News of his death was confirmed by his colleague, Jide Kosoko, in an emotional Instagram post on Thursday. Kosoko, however, did not share details regarding the cause of death.

Kosoko’s tribute read, “Good night ooo, Baba Charles. a.k.a Agbako, 102 years, ba wasa ba. R I P.”

Born on February 19, 1923, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Agbako initially pursued a career as a mechanic and amateur boxer before stepping into acting in 1953.

He began performing at the Apostolic Church in Mushin, Lagos State, where he developed his passion for the craft.

Over his extensive career, Agbako became a beloved figure in the Yoruba film industry, known for his memorable roles in movies such as *Taxi Driver*, *Jagun*, *Amin Orun*, *Aiye*, *Jayesinmi*, *Soworo Ide*, and *Igbo Dudu*.

His talent and versatility helped him build a reputation as a skilled and dedicated actor, especially admired for his dramatic portrayals and intense character work.

Spanning more than 40 years, Agbako’s acting journey left an indelible mark on Nollywood, inspiring countless actors and fans alike.

His enduring legacy lives on in the films and memories he has left behind. The Nigerian entertainment industry has truly lost a giant, and his contributions to Yoruba cinema will be cherished for generations to come.
