Wizkid Sparks Debate Claiming No Blueprint to Fame

Wizkid no blueprint remark in HBO documentary sparks debate over mentorship and veteran contributions to Nigeria’s music industry.

Lagos, Nigeria, 25 November 2025— Nigerian Afrobeat superstar Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, professionally known as Wizkid, has stirred controversy after claiming he had “no blueprint” while rising to fame.

The statement was made in a snippet from his upcoming HBO documentary Long Live Lagos.

Wizkid, who first gained prominence under the mentorship of veteran singer Banky W, said, “There was no blueprint for me. I had to build a structure for myself.”

The remark quickly ignited debate on social media, with fans and industry commentators questioning whether Wizkid’s comment downplayed Banky W’s pivotal role in his early career.

Many argued that the statement appeared dismissive of veteran Nigerian musicians who helped shape the country’s contemporary music scene.

Long Live Lagos explores Wizkid’s journey from the streets of Ojuelegba to global superstardom, highlighting his creative process, collaborations, and international success.

Observers noted that while the documentary celebrates his achievements, the no-blueprint claim overshadowed the broader narrative of mentorship and industry guidance.

Music analysts said the backlash reflects the ongoing tension between emerging artists and recognition of the contributions of those who paved the way.

Social media platforms were flooded with debates on mentorship, artistic independence, and the role of veterans in nurturing talent.
