Ugezu J. Ugezu Left Christianity and embraced African traditional spirituality, citing self-discovery and personal conviction

Ugezu made the remarks during an appearance on the KAA Truths podcast, where he spoke at length about identity, philosophy and the importance of questioning long-held beliefs.

The Enugu-Ukwu-born entertainer from Anambra State said his spiritual transition was shaped by a deeper understanding of himself and his place in the world.

According to the actor, maturity involves self-knowledge and a willingness to reassess inherited ideas.

“Traditionalism is the best way for me. Because maturity entails that you get to know yourself, and that is the whole essence of philosophy: that man should know himself,” Ugezu said.

The filmmaker argued that many people move through life without fully examining the beliefs they inherited from birth.

He said questioning such beliefs can create opportunities to unlearn certain ideas and adopt convictions that better align with personal understanding.

“So I may be a Christian by birth, but I am an African traditionalist as I speak, and I want to remain that way because it is the best way for me,” he added.

Ugezu said African traditional spirituality appealed to him because of what he described as its inclusive nature.

He argued that the belief system accepts people without discrimination and reflects values he associates with genuine godliness.

The comments have generated discussion across social media, with supporters and critics offering differing perspectives on faith, identity and personal choice.

Some users praised the actor for openly expressing his convictions, while others questioned whether personal fulfilment alone should determine religious belief.

The debate reflects broader conversations taking place across Nigeria about culture, spirituality and the role of traditional belief systems in contemporary society.

Ugezu has long been known for using his films and public commentary to address social, cultural and political issues.

In recent years, the actor has frequently encouraged Africans to reconnect with indigenous values and traditions, making his latest declaration consistent with positions he has previously expressed in public discussions.

The development also comes weeks after Ugezu attracted attention for retracting allegations of financial misconduct involving an associate of former military ruler Sani Abacha, a move that renewed public focus on the veteran filmmaker’s views and public interventions.

While reactions remain divided, Ugezu maintained that his decision was deeply personal and rooted in what he believes is the most authentic path for his life.
