Portable shares his experience in police detention, addressing mental health claims and harsh conditions while interacting with his cellmates
Controversial Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola, widely known as Portable, has revealed new details about his recent time in police custody, following his detention last month on charges of assault and other allegations.
Speaking candidly during an interview on Echo Room, the outspoken musician shared his side of the story, shedding light on the conditions he faced and correcting public misconceptions about his mental state.
Portable, known for his bold personality, was detained after an incident involving physical altercations, but he used his time in custody to address rumors, particularly those surrounding his mental stability.
The singer recounted, “They said I am a crazy person. When I got to the government, I told them I am not crazy,” clearing the air on claims about his sanity.
Despite the serious charges, Portable described his arrival at the detention facility with an unexpected twist. Upon entering the cell, he was greeted with respect, with the leader of the cell stepping down voluntarily to allow Portable to take charge.
However, the singer declined the offer, making it clear that he did not belong in that environment. “I said no, this is not my house,” he stated, emphasizing that he was not meant to be there.
He went on to explain the tough conditions in the cell, where new detainees were reportedly beaten upon arrival. However, Portable expressed his gratitude for escaping such treatment, highlighting his relative safety during the ordeal.
One of the most intriguing aspects of Portable’s account was his interaction with fellow detainees, some of whom were accused of murder. According to the singer, some of these cellmates suggested they pray together, but Portable refused, arguing that their prayers would not be effective.
“A person said we should pray; I said no, God doesn’t answer this kind of prayer,” he explained. The singer explained that since none of them shared a similar experience—he had never killed anyone—he did not feel their prayers could align.
Portable’s time in detention also allowed him to reflect on his personal beliefs, including how he interacted with his cellmates. “When I entered Cell 4, I blessed them. Normally, they beat new people in the cell.
When I got there, the head of the cell dethroned himself for me to become the leader, but I said no, this is not my house,” he recalled. Despite the tension and hardship, Portable remained true to his personality, refusing to succumb to the pressures of his environment.
The singer’s reflection on his time behind bars is a mix of self-awareness and defiance, as he reaffirms his identity amidst controversy. While his comments have sparked discussions, they also show a side of Portable that his fans may not have expected: thoughtful, yet unwavering in his stance on personal beliefs and values.
Portable’s legal troubles are not over yet, but his recent interview offers a glimpse into how he’s processing the situation. Whether his experience in detention will change his public image or add more fuel to the fire remains to be seen, but for now, he remains resolute in his perspective.
