Speaking at the Meet Surrogate Mothers free IVF conference, the 43-year-old star said, “The surrogate who carried my child was not a stranger from a nameless system. She was a woman with her own family, her values, and her dreams.”

Edo explained that her experience was emotionally rich and collaborative. “I was involved every step of the way. Intended mothers are typically involved in parental care, prenatal care, medical decisions, and emotional bonding during pregnancy,” she added.

Rejecting the notion of surrogacy as transactional, she emphasised that surrogacy must be approached with empathy and legal clarity. “We need a new narrative that champions ethical surrogacy grounded in informed consent, legal protection, and mutual respect.”

Edo praised the House of Representatives’ proposed bill to ban commercial surrogacy in Nigeria, highlighting its key provisions. These include restrictions to strictly altruistic arrangements, protection against coercion, and legal recognition of parental rights.

“Surrogacy is not perfect, it needs regulation, transparency, empathy but it’s not a factory,” she said. “It’s a bridge between despair and joy… between the impossible and the miraculous.”
