Pete Edochie shares how marrying early and avoiding distractions helped him sustain his 57-year marriage

Veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie has offered a candid reflection on his 57-year marriage, saying his decision to settle down early and his determination to avoid distractions have helped him maintain stability in his personal life.

Edochie, who has been married to Josephine Edochie since 1969, spoke about the longevity of their union during his Legacy Tour activities in Ghana on October 3, 2026.

His remarks have renewed public interest in the marriage of one of Nigeria’s most respected veteran actors.

The actor said he made the decision to marry early and has remained focused throughout his decades in the public eye.

“I married early. I’ve been married for 57 years. I don’t get distracted easily. I don’t allow women to distract me,” Edochie said.

His comments reflect the same emphasis on discipline that has featured in some of his recent discussions about marriage. In September, Edochie told interviewer Isbae U that his views on marital responsibility were shaped by almost six decades of experience as a husband.

During the Ghana appearance, however, Edochie gave a broader account of the lifestyle he believes has helped him remain grounded.

Recent coverage of the event reported that he spoke about reading, listening to classical music and keeping himself occupied as part of his daily routine.

He also stressed that his experience should not automatically be treated as a universal formula for successful marriage.

The veteran actor’s marriage to Josephine began in 1969, when both were connected to the broadcasting industry.

The couple have six children and have maintained their family life through Edochie’s long transition from broadcasting into acting and his subsequent rise to prominence in Nollywood.

Their marriage has previously been marked publicly by anniversary celebrations.

In 2022, Edochie and Josephine celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary, with the actor publicly describing his wife as his queen and thanking their children for organising the celebration.

Edochie’s latest reflection comes shortly after he made another widely discussed intervention on marriage and financial responsibility.

In September, he cautioned married men against becoming dependent on their wives for basic upkeep, arguing that such dependence could create emotional pressure within a relationship.

The two sets of remarks have placed renewed attention on the veteran actor’s own experience as a husband, particularly because his marriage has lasted through more than five decades of changing social expectations, professional demands and public attention.

Edochie has remained a prominent figure in Nigerian entertainment since rising to national prominence through his acting career, particularly his celebrated portrayal of Okonkwo in the television adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart.

His career has subsequently spanned several decades and more than 200 screen roles, according to his official legacy platform.

For Edochie, the story behind his 57-year marriage is therefore less about a single secret than a personal philosophy centred on early commitment, discipline and staying focused.
