A Nigerian film-maker, director and media consultant, Niyi Akinmolayan, who is best known for directing the highest grossing Nigerian film of all time, set tongues wagging recently for partaking in Ṣàngó worshiping ritual.

Ṣàngó, also known as Changó or Xangô in Latin America and as Jakuta or Badé, is an Orisa, a deity in Yoruba religion.

In a post shared by the filmmaker himself on his microblogging site handle, Twitter, Akinmolayan revealed that the ritual is a part of a documentary in production.

The filmmaker also wrote highly of the popular and legendary deity’s love for fashion as the orisa is known for always plaiting his hair like a woman.

“Today I visited sango’s shrine. Did some acts of worship, spat out Chelsea gin on the altar and picked bitterkola off the floor with my mouth and I made a lot of prayers for Anthill studios. Did you know that Sango was a fashionista…he had so much hair his wives braided them.

“That’s why Sango worshippers braid their hair and even pierced their ears and use lots of jewelry. We will be hanging out with lots of Sango worshipers tomorrow as part of our #rainmaker documentary. So much to be revealed,” he wrote excitedly.
