“Speaking Yoruba is Draining” – Actress Adunni Ade Spark Debate on Language and Identity

Nollywood actress Adunni Ade has ignited a firestorm on social media after a recent post criticizing the media’s portrayal of her interviews. Ade, known for her outspoken personality and roles in Yoruba films, expressed frustration that her comments are “always twisted and interpreted negatively.”

The controversy stems from an interview with ChannelsTV where Adunni Ade reportedly voiced annoyance at being asked about acting in Yoruba films. The actress further claimed questions often asked by some fans were “rudely” posed and not relevant to the topic at hand.

In a post on her X handle, Adunni Ade said, “These are the issues. This is one major reason why I avoid interviews. Everything I say is always twisted and interpreted negatively.

“I said people asking me randomly (most times rudely) erks my nerves. This question had nothing to do with me been featured in Yoruba films. The h@te I receive from a lot is quite alarming. Why put out a false narrative?

“Please note, I am not dragging position, title, culture, nationality or language with anyone. I’m just living my life trying to be the best being and mother to my children.”

Ade’s social media post has drawn a mixed response. Many fans rallied behind the actress, sympathizing with her struggles with media scrutiny. Comments like “Leave her alone!” and “She’s just trying to live her life” flooded her page.

However, others took a more critical approach. Some users accused Ade of being overly sensitive and challenged her claim that questions are always “twisted.” One user commented, “Maybe if you phrased your responses differently, there wouldn’t be misunderstandings.”

The debate extends beyond the initial interview. Ade has been a vocal critic of certain aspects of the Nollywood industry, particularly during the recent elections. Her comments about colleagues who campaigned for politicians for “pittances” sparked tension within the Yoruba film community.

This latest incident adds fuel to the perception of Adunni Ade as a controversial figure. While some admire her candor, others find her pronouncements inflammatory. The media’s role in portraying these comments further complicates the issue.
