Yeni Kuti defends Wizkid in feud with Seun Kuti, urging respect for Fela Kuti’s legacy and unity ahead of the Grammy Awards

Yeni Kuti, first child of the late Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti, has publicly defended singer Wizkid amid his ongoing online dispute with her brother, Seun Kuti, during an appearance on the Your View programme.

The disagreement began when Seun Kuti criticised Wizkid’s fanbase, popularly known as Wizkid FC, for comparing the singer’s achievements to those of their father.

The online clash escalated when Seun challenged Wizkid to demonstrate his commitment to his fans, prompting Wizkid to respond that he was “bigger than your father,” sparking widespread debate and backlash on social media.

Yeni Kuti, however, refused to take sides, describing Wizkid as a close friend and expressing her affection for him.

She emphasised that public attention should focus on celebrating Fela Kuti’s enduring legacy rather than personal conflicts.

“I love Wizkid a lot. You know, Wizkid is my padi now. When two giants fight, it’s the grass that suffers. I refuse to enter some of the insults that they are hauling because I love Wizkid a lot,” Yeni Kuti said.

The Afrobeat heir also encouraged Nigerians to unite in honour of her father at the 2026 Grammy Awards, stressing that the feud should not overshadow the celebration of Fela’s contributions to music.

“We’re just about to go and celebrate our icon at the Grammy, and you’re all doing as if you are trying to dent it. It’s not Fela or Fela family that you are denting, it’s all Nigeria,” she added.

Yeni Kuti further reminded the public that Fela Kuti has been deceased for 27 years and that his influence remains unassailable.
