Chinedu Okeke Nollywood roles led to public stigma as a thief, hitman, and bad boy — the actor says he walked away to seek better opportunities

Actor Chinedu Okeke has revealed why he quit Nollywood, citing the psychological toll of being repeatedly cast in criminal roles. He said he initially embraced the “bad boy,” “hitman,” and “thief” characters, but later became deeply uncomfortable when people started associating him with those roles in real life.

In a candid statement, Okeke explained, “I was okay playing the bad boy, hitman, and thief roles at first… until fans started pointing at me off camera and shouting, ‘See that thief from film.’”

The actor said he began to question the impact of his on-screen image on his personal life and reputation. “There are certain roles you play in movies that make people see you like that in real life. At one point I asked myself, ‘Is this who I really am?’” he said.

According to Okeke, the constant typecasting limited his artistic range and made it difficult for audiences to separate his characters from his true identity.

He shared that the turning point came when the public perception began to affect him emotionally. He believed he could offer more than just playing criminals and decided to walk away.

“I knew I could do better, so I walked away,” he stated.
