Doris Ogala says she will become Abia governor in 2027 as the AAC candidate speaks about her political ambition and power supply concerns

African Action Congress governorship candidate Doris Ogala has declared that she will become the next governor of Abia State, expressing confidence in her chances ahead of the 2027 election.

The Nollywood actress-turned-politician made the declaration while discussing her experience in Abia State, where she said she had spent about three months.

“I will be the next Governor of Abia State and nothing can stop me. I’m so sure of it because I’m better than all of them,” Ogala said.

Her comments have drawn attention to what is already shaping up to be a competitive 2027 governorship contest in Abia, with several established political figures and parties preparing for the race.

Ogala secured the African Action Congress governorship ticket in May, making her one of the candidates expected to challenge incumbent Governor Alex Otti at the 2027 election.

Otti, who came to power in 2023 under the Labour Party, has already secured his party’s ticket for a second term.

The APC has also selected businessman Eric Opah as its candidate, while the PDP is fielding Kelechi Anosike.

The political landscape means Ogala faces a formidable field, with the incumbent seeking re-election and major opposition parties already settling on their candidates.

Ogala’s confidence is not new. In July, she declared during a TikTok broadcast that she would become Abia’s next governor, saying her emergence was already settled.

Her latest remarks also touched on conditions she said she had experienced during her time in the state, particularly electricity supply.

“I have been in Abia for three months now, no light. I sleep in my family house and we don’t have light,” she said.

The comment has added a human-interest dimension to her political message, placing electricity access alongside her broader ambition to lead the state.

Ogala’s declaration has generated mixed reactions online, with some social media users questioning her experience and policy credentials, while others focused on the confidence with which she presented her ambition.

Her supporters, however, have an increasingly formal political platform behind them following her emergence as the AAC candidate.

The wider race is already gathering momentum. Governor Otti has received endorsements for a second term from influential groups, including the Ukwa La Ngwa-Aba Union, which adopted him as its sole candidate for the 2027 election.

The APC’s Opah will provide another major challenge, while the PDP has indicated that it intends to contest the governorship rather than concede the state to Otti’s Labour Party.

Against that backdrop, Ogala’s emphatic declaration represents an early attempt to establish herself as a serious contender rather than simply a celebrity entering politics.

Whether her confidence translates into electoral support will ultimately depend on her campaign organisation, policy proposals and ability to build a broad coalition across Abia’s 17 local government areas.

For now, Ogala is making her position unmistakable: she intends to compete for the state’s highest political office and believes nothing can prevent her from winning it.
