NFVCB asks Ini Edo to modify her film title following public backlash and CAN concerns over ‘A Very Dirty Christmas’

The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has formally requested Nollywood actress Ini Edo to modify the title of her newly released film, A Very Dirty Christmas, following public backlash and complaints from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

The family drama, which premiered in cinemas on December 16, was criticised by CAN for being “offensive and a mockery” of the Christian faith.

The religious body argued that the title diminishes the spiritual significance of Christmas and urged the producers to reconsider it and issue a public apology.

Dr Shaibu Husseini, Executive Director and CEO of the NFVCB, explained in an interview on Friday in Abuja that while the board approved the film based on its plot and content, public perception is a critical element of effective regulation.

“The approval was granted as an act of fictional and creative expression and was not intended to disparage the Christian faith or the significance of Christmas,” Husseini said.

“However, in light of the concerns raised by CAN, the board has formally engaged the producers and requested a modification of the title to avoid interpretations that may offend Christian sensibilities.”

Husseini stressed that the action aligns with Section 39(1) of the Film Censorship Committee mandate, which empowers the board to order the withdrawal or review of films in the public interest.

He reassured the public that NFVCB prioritises religious sensitivity, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence, noting, “Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity, and the board ensures that films exhibited do not undermine religious harmony or offend deeply held beliefs.”
