Mr Macaroni’s ‘Freedom Way’ explores police injustice and wins big at AMVCA, spotlighting Nigeria’s broken systems and urgent youth realities

Mr Macaroni’s Freedom Way film is drawing national attention after the powerful social drama won multiple awards at the 2025 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA).

The film, written and produced by Blessing Uzzi and directed by Olalekan Afolabi, explores how young Nigerians navigate unstable systems, police injustice and policy failures while trying to make something of their lives.

Debo Adedayo, popularly known as Mr Macaroni, plays a police officer in the film.

He described the story as deeply relevant to Nigerian society, adding, “What was most endearing was the way we all connect, and the way every action and inaction affects the next person. I want people to feel and understand there should be consequences for their actions.”

The film stars Femi Jacobs, Bimbo Akintola, Meg Otanwa, Jesse Suntele, Akin Lewis, and Teniola Aladese, among others.

It’s an important story. I want it to inspire conversations. If it does that, then we’ve done our job.

It took home awards for Best Film and Best Writing, while receiving nominations in multiple categories including Best Supporting Actor and Best Sound Design.

Mr Macaroni Freedom Way film was produced under Bluhouse Studios, founded by Uzzi in 2021. The studio has worked with stars like Davido and Cobhams and brands such as Tecno and Bet9ja.

Director Olalekan Afolabi said, “It’s an important story. I want it to inspire conversations. If it does that, then we’ve done our job.”

Uzzi added, “It feels surreal to finally see Freedom Way screened in Nigerian cinemas. I’m excited to see how people receive it here, where it matters most.”
