Tyla’s African Music Journey has become a powerful symbol of artistic resilience and cultural pride after the Grammy-winning singer revealed how early career struggles pushed her deeper into her roots.

The South African pop star, who was just 21 years old when her breakout hit catapulted her to global stardom, opened up in a recent Variety Magazine interview about being pressured into making Bubblegum Pop when she first signed to Epic Music at the age of 19.

“Those songs didn’t feel like me at all,” she admitted.

Despite the emotional turmoil, Tyla used the experience as fuel.

Instead of folding under industry pressure, she became even more determined to carve out a sound rooted in African music a choice that ultimately defined her success.

I was crying in my hotel room thinking, ‘This is not what I want. I didn’t get signed to do this.

Tyla swept major award categories globally, including VMAs, EMAs, AMAs, the BET Award for Best International Act, and the first-ever Grammy for Best African Song Performance.

Now fully in control of her creative direction, she recently released the video for ‘Dynamite’ featuring Nigerian Afrobeats giant Wizkid, an artist she credits as a musical influence.

“It made me more persistent in keeping my ideas,” she said of the struggle.

“And it made me love African music even more.”
