K1 De Ultimate controversy erupts after viral video shows singer failing to bow to Ooni of Ife, sparking cultural outrage and divided opinions online
K1 De Ultimate controversy is dominating online discourse after a viral video showed the Fuji music icon interacting with the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, without the expected show of deference.
The brief but tense moment, captured during a recent public event, has sparked outrage among many Yoruba social media users who insist that his behaviour breached cultural protocol.
In the widely circulated footage, the monarch is seen walking up to greet the singer, whose real name is Wasiu Ayinde Marshal. Rather than bow or prostrate as is customary when addressing a king of the Ooni’s stature, K1 merely nodded in acknowledgment, prompting sharp criticism.
The video was accompanied by the caption: “Why did K1 De Ultimate fail to bow down for Ooni of Ife while exchanging pleasantry? This is highly disrespectful.” Within hours, the internet exploded with reactions ranging from deep disappointment to cultural outrage.
One user, @ola\_billz1, commented, “No matter how close you are to someone before he ascends the throne, as a good Yoruba person, you must show that person respect.”
Another user, @soberdrunk88, did not hold back, calling the act “a very big abomination,” and added, “Even former President Obasanjo bows before the Ooni.”
Many critics argued that K1’s response undermined the authority of the Ooni and disrespected the long-standing traditions that guide Yoruba interaction with royalty.
The Ooni of Ife is not only a prominent traditional ruler but also seen as a spiritual figurehead for the Yoruba people, making the singer’s action appear especially offensive to cultural purists.
Despite the backlash, some voices rose in defence of the music veteran. Among them was @idrisabdulkareem11, who offered a culturally rooted explanation.
“K1 is the Mayegun of Yorubaland. Holding such a title, it’s a taboo to bow or prostrate for any king again,” he wrote. The Mayegun title is one of the highest chieftaincy honours in Yoruba land, bestowed on K1 by the Alaafin of Oyo before his passing.
This defence, however, did not pacify all critics. Some argued that regardless of titles, respect for the Ooni transcends social rank and should be visibly upheld in public engagements. The Mayegun title, they say, should enhance one’s commitment to tradition, not diminish it.
The K1 De Ultimate controversy has ignited broader conversations about the intersection of tradition, modern status, and cultural symbolism in Nigeria’s evolving social fabric.
The tension lies not only in what happened but in what it represents: a potential erosion of values under the weight of celebrity status and personal honour.
Others view the backlash as a reflection of deeper societal tensions, where lines between respect and recognition are being redrawn by the influence of fame and hierarchy. For some Yoruba traditionalists, the incident is a teachable moment on the importance of preserving long-established norms.
Cultural analyst Femi Adebayo, speaking anonymously, noted, “This is not about Wasiu Ayinde alone. It is a broader reflection of how we’re renegotiating respect in modern Nigeria. The backlash tells us the people still value their traditions.”
Neither K1 De Ultimate nor the Ooni of Ife has released an official statement addressing the video, but insiders suggest the matter may be quietly resolved behind the scenes to preserve public harmony.
Until then, the K1 De Ultimate controversy continues to trend across social media platforms, rekindling debate over how much weight cultural institutions still hold in the face of celebrity influence.
