Patience Ozokwor royalties Nollywood concerns expose why many actors struggle financially despite years in the industry

Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor, widely known as Mama G, has criticised the absence of a structured royalties system in Nigeria’s film industry, describing it as a major reason many actors face persistent financial hardship.

Speaking during an appearance on the show “Curiosity Made Me Ask”, hosted by Isbae U, the actress said performers typically receive only a one-time payment for film roles, regardless of how frequently those productions continue to generate revenue.

Mrs Ozokwor said the lack of residual income under the current system explains why some actors, even after decades of work, are compelled to seek public assistance.

“The problem why you see us beg is because they don’t give us royalties. We just work and toil so hard, and then that peanut, that money you gave us on board to come and shoot for you, is the only thing we get,” Mrs Ozokwor said.

Drawing a sharp comparison with more developed film industries, the actress noted that performers abroad continue to earn income from their work long after production ends, calling the disparity striking.

“Go and look at the smallest actors in developed countries. Every work they do fetches them money every day of their lives,” she said.

Mrs Ozokwor added that in those systems, royalties often extend beyond an actor’s lifetime, providing financial security for their families.

The contrast, she said, underscores the urgent need for reform in Nollywood’s compensation structure.

The remarks also shed light on a growing shift within the industry, as many Nigerian actors turn to digital platforms such as YouTube to monetise their content independently and secure more sustainable income streams.

“That’s why everyone is running to YouTube,” Mrs Ozokwor said.
