19th AMAA: Organisers Reiterate Call For Entries

The African Film Academy (AFA), organisers of the globally-celebrated Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) has reiterated the call for submission of entries for the 19th edition of the annual awards, slated to hold in Lagos, Nigeria later this year.

The call reiterated that submissions started on December 1, 2022 and will be open till March 31, 2023.

Late entry deadline is said to be June 30, 2023.

The reiteration is considered necessary after the sudden death of AMAA Founder, Peace Anyiam-Osigwe, earlier this month.

The family of the deceased, in formally announcing her death, had said the dream of the founder would not perish, promising that both AMAA and the series of film training programmes, such as Film In A Box and the 100 Movie Project initiated by the founder, would continue on a yearly basis through AFA.

As such, nominations for this year’s AMAA will be announced in August 2023, with only “films produced and released between January 2022 and 30th March 2023 maybe submitted,” according to the organisers.

“Each completed entry for 2023 entries must be accompanied by all the supporting materials listed on the submission forms, including a synopsis of the film, the list of credits, marketing stills of the film, filmographies of the directors and producers, emails of cast and crew submissions can be made on https://filmfreeway.com/festival/africamovieacademyawards-882089

“All films must indicate the year of copyright. The Africa Film Academy will not accept any film that exceeds the 120-minute run as a feature film or a short film that is longer than 40 minutes.

“AMAA awards two major categories of short films and animation. The Academy also awards the category for Best Africa Film in the Diaspora and Best Diaspora Short Film Awards, inclusive of Caribbean Shorts and Caribbean features.”

Organisers also said for this 19th edition, AFA intends to introduce a special category for Asian Foreign Language Film.

The 19th edition of the AMAAs will be held on October 29, 2023 in Lagos in partnership with the Lagos State Government and will be televised globally.

Organisers of Real Talk With Kike have unveiled a high-profile lineup of speakers for the programme’s seventh anniversary celebration, which will also commemorate ace broadcaster Kikelomo Atanda-Owo Abati’s more than 20-year journey in the Nigerian media industry.

The milestone event will hold on October 10, 2026, at Eko Hotels and Suites, Lagos, bringing together leaders from government, business, media and culture for conversations on Nigeria’s future.

Leading the keynote sessions are Dr Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat, Deputy Governor of Lagos State, and Mr Vlassis Liakouris, Group Managing Director of Mandilas Group Limited.

Also confirmed as distinguished speakers are Mr Kola Adesina, Group Managing Director of Sahara Group, and Dr Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji, Founder of Rise Network, while Mrs Bola Adesola, Chairman of the Board of Ecobank Nigeria, will deliver the goodwill message.

The speakers will engage the theme, “The Future of Nigeria: Where Leadership, Innovation, Culture and Media Converge to Shape Nation Building,” exploring how governance, enterprise, innovation and storytelling can shape national development.

According to the organisers, the theme reflects the philosophy that has defined Real Talk With Kike over the past seven years as a platform for meaningful conversations on leadership, society, business, relationships, culture and contemporary issues affecting Nigeria.

For Kikelomo Atanda-Owo Abati, the celebration marks two significant milestones. Beyond the programme’s seventh anniversary, it also celebrates more than two decades of broadcasting, making the occasion a tribute to longevity, impact and the power of dialogue.

The multidisciplinary speaker lineup mirrors the event’s nation-building focus. Hamzat is expected to share perspectives on public leadership and governance, while Adesina and Liakouris will discuss private-sector leadership, enterprise and innovation. Akerele-Ogunsiji will contribute insights on education, youth development and innovation, with Adesola bringing the perspective of corporate governance and financial-sector leadership.
