Ini Edo A Very Detty Christmas sparks controversy; actress defends her Nollywood film, emphasising art’s role in provoking thought

She assured fans that as a devoted Christian, she would never knowingly participate in any work that misrepresents or undermines her religion.

“My beautiful people, let’s not be distracted. The film is a masterpiece. Please come out to watch and support your girl,” the actress wrote.

The controversy highlights ongoing debates over Nollywood, the Nigerian film industry.

The term, first used in the early 2000s, was popularised in articles by Matt Steinglass and Norimitsu Onishi in The New York Times to describe Nigerian cinema.

While it is widely regarded as a portmanteau of “Nigeria” and “Hollywood,” the exact origin and definition remain contested.

Nollywood is a diverse industry, divided along regional, ethnic, and sometimes religious lines.

Its English-language sector, however, brings together filmmakers from across these regional industries, creating a melting pot that reflects Nigeria’s broad cultural and social spectrum.
