Actress Jemima Osunde criticises the growing pressure on actors to become social media content creators in order to secure film roles

Popular Nigerian actress Jemima Osunde has publicly criticised the growing trend in the film industry that pressures actors into becoming social media content creators as a requirement for landing acting roles.

In a passionate video posted on her social media platforms, Osunde voiced her frustration, stating that the industry’s increasing demand for actors to push promotional content online undermines the craft of acting itself.

“Now they are forcing actors to be social media content creators. It’s like, ‘You see that dance? You must dance on the internet.’ Why?” she asked rhetorically.

The Shuga actress expressed concern over how casting decisions now often favour social media visibility over raw acting talent.

She stressed that acting should be based on skill, not online popularity, citing Hollywood star Keanu Reeves as an example of an actor who continues to thrive with little to no social media presence.

“That should not be my job! How many times do you see Keanu Reeves when he is not on your screen?” she quipped.

Osunde, who was nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role at the 15th Africa Movie Academy Awards for her performance in The Delivery Boy (2018), has become increasingly vocal about the challenges facing modern-day actors, particularly in Nigeria’s fast-evolving entertainment landscape.

Beyond her acting career, Osunde has also faced public scrutiny and recently debunked rumours of undergoing BBL surgery. She used that moment to reinforce her advocacy for natural beauty, insisting that people should not place expectations on her image, online or off-screen.
