The annual Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) is once again generating considerable excitement and glamour as it approaches.
This prestigious event celebrates the vibrant and growing African film and television industry, bringing together established stars and emerging talents.
This year’s nominations have spotlighted a host of new faces and names across various categories, signalling a promising future for African storytelling.
Among the debut nominees generating buzz is Mike Afolarin, known for his role in the popular series “Far From Home.” Afolarin received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his compelling portrayal of Oyemekun in “House of Ga’a.”
This marks his first AMVCA nomination, adding to his growing list of credits in films such as “Ajosepo,” “Freedom Way,” “Ajuwaya,” and “Soole.” His nomination serves as a testament to his dedication and hard work in the industry.
Another notable newcomer is Dorcas Ariyiike Owolagba, widely recognised as Ariyiike Dimples. A versatile talent working as a content creator, actress, radio host, and compere, Owolagba saw her YouTube series, “Risky,” nominated for Best Digital Content Creator.
The series follows a young woman’s often humorous and questionable pursuit of true love. Owolagba’s nomination acknowledges her relentless drive and the increasing impact of digital content creators in the African entertainment landscape.
Joining Owolagba in the Best Digital Content Creator category is the talented Iyo Peosper Adokiye.
His innovative digital Bible series, “We Listen, We Don’t Judge,” earned him his first AMVCA nomination.
The series creatively reimagines scenarios with Biblical characters, adding a comedic twist that has resonated with audiences. Adokiye’s nomination celebrates his consistency and unique creative approach.
The list of fresh faces extends beyond acting and digital content creation. Omolola Lamikanra secured a nomination for Best Writer for her work on “Skelton Coast,” while Opeyemi Sogeke’s talent in costume design was recognised with a nomination for Best Costume Design for “Phoenix Fury.”
South African filmmaker Norman Maake made a significant impact with his film “Inkabi,” which garnered an impressive six nominations across multiple categories.
In the acting categories, Uche Montana received a nomination for Best Lead Actress for her role in “Thin Line,” and Uzoamaka Onuoha, a previous Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) winner, was nominated for Best Lead Actress for her exceptional performance in “Agemo.”
Aliu Gafar earned a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his outstanding work in “Seven Doors,” and Darasimi Nadi was recognised in the Best Supporting Actress category for her compelling portrayal of Rofi in “Aburo.”
Additionally, Gbugbemi Ejeye, known for her roles in “Far From Home” and “Citation,” received a nomination for Best Lead Actress for her performance as Funmi in “Farmer’s Bride.”
Behind the scenes, Papama Tangela’s cinematography in “Agemo” earned him a nomination, while Jide Pounds Ibitoye’s digital series “Abike Ati Asola” was nominated for Best Digital Content Creator.
South African composer Seoli Bongani Mashaba’s work on “Inkabi” was also recognised with a nomination. Furthermore, Prince Daniel Aboki celebrated the nomination of two of his films in the Best Indigenous Language category.
