Kenneth Okonkwo 2027 Northern candidate strategy revealed: The Labour Party member says he’ll back a Northerner if they meet key qualifications

Labour Party chieftain and Nollywood actor, Kenneth Okonkwo, has declared his intention to support a Northern presidential candidate in the 2027 general election, provided the individual meets certain conditions.

The statement, which has stirred significant political conversation, was made during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

The Kenneth Okonkwo 2027 Northern candidate stance represents a strategic pivot for the actor-turned-lawyer, who was a prominent figure in the 2023 campaign team of former Anambra governor, Peter Obi.

Speaking candidly, Okonkwo said his primary consideration for 2027 is national unity and electability.

“My own strategy this time around is that I am going to support a Northerner in 2027,” Okonkwo said, adding, “And it must be… My condition to the Northerners is that it must be a Northerner whom the whole North will be willing to support.”

When asked whether he could back former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Okonkwo was open to the possibility. “If the whole North is ready to support an Atiku, why not?” he said.

Atiku Abubakar, who hails from Adamawa State in Nigeria’s North-East region, was the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in both the 2019 and 2023 elections.

He is widely believed to be preparing for another bid, and he is a key figure in ongoing coalition talks seeking to unseat President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

The Kenneth Okonkwo 2027 Northern candidate declaration extended to other Northern political heavyweights. When questioned about the possibility of supporting Aminu Tambuwal, former governor of Sokoto State, Okonkwo said, “If the whole North is willing to support him, why not?”

However, he was quick to add that support would not be given unconditionally. “The person must be qualified, must have experience, and if he has experience in the presidency, that’s an added advantage,” he explained. “And when you put up anything from the South, that would push him through.”

Okonkwo’s emphasis on national acceptability, competence, and experience appears to be a response to lingering concerns about political zoning and the polarisation of recent Nigerian elections along ethnic and regional lines.

On the sensitive issue of power rotation, he provided historical context, citing the late former Vice President Alex Ekwueme. “Let me use this opportunity to clarify, the term of the president is four years, not eight years,” he said.

“According to Alex Ekwueme, what they agreed initially is that this ought to be rotated among the geopolitical zones, for a four-year term. And in 24 years it would have been completed.”

His remarks are likely to ignite deeper conversations about zoning arrangements, constitutional reforms, and the future of national consensus in Nigeria’s political space.

As a member of the Labour Party who is also part of a wider opposition coalition that includes the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Okonkwo’s statement may also hint at ongoing behind-the-scenes negotiations over a unified opposition presidential ticket for 2027.

Reactions on social media have been mixed, with some praising his pragmatic approach, while others question the implications for Southern representation in future elections.
