Mohbad death court verdict reveals no direct link to Naira Marley, urges prosecution of unlicensed nurse and criticises family, music industry failures

The Lagos State Coroner Court has delivered its verdict on the controversial death of singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, known as Mohbad, recommending the prosecution of the unlicensed nurse who treated him before his sudden demise.

Magistrate Adedayo Shotobi, who led the inquest, concluded that while Mohbad was subjected to harassment and bullying by his former label boss Naira Marley and associate Sam Larry, there was no clear evidence linking their actions to his immediate cause of death.

The court identified Nurse Feyisayo Ogedengbe as the individual who administered care to Mohbad in his final hours. Her lack of proper medical licensing was highlighted as a critical factor requiring legal action.

In its judgment, the coroner criticised Mohbad’s father for what it described as a “hasty” and “undignified” burial, arguing that cultural beliefs should not override legal and medical obligations.

The court said, “He should have obtained a death certificate and an autopsy report, considering the sudden nature of the death.”

The court also censured Mohbad’s wife, noting that she failed to ensure adequate medical attention was given after the artist sustained injuries days prior to his death. It further stated she ought to have spoken against the improper handling of his body.

After 19 witnesses testified during the lengthy inquiry, the court determined that multiple failures from family, healthcare, and the music industry contributed to the unfortunate circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death.

“This is a tragedy worsened by silence, neglect, and institutional failure,” the coroner noted.
