Segun Arinze laments loss of originality in Nollywood, warning that filmmakers are copying foreign content instead of telling authentic Nigerian stories

Segun Arinze, the veteran Nollywood actor and director, has voiced concern over what he described as a growing decline in originality within Nigeria’s film industry.

Speaking during a recent media engagement, the seasoned performer said there is “a bit of distraction” as many creatives increasingly imitate foreign trends instead of developing unique, homegrown narratives.

According to Segun Arinze, the shift towards copying international styles has created a creative vacuum, with fewer filmmakers willing to explore stories rooted in Nigerian realities.

He emphasised that Nollywood’s strength has always been its cultural authenticity and its ability to connect emotionally with local audiences.

“It’s worrying that we’re beginning to lose that distinctive voice,” Arinze remarked. “There’s a bit of distraction, and too many people are chasing what they see abroad rather than nurturing our own originality.

The world appreciated Nollywood because of our stories — not because we were trying to be like Hollywood.”

The actor, who has been a central figure in the Nigerian film industry for over three decades, urged younger filmmakers to focus on storytelling that reflects the nation’s diverse experiences.

He also called for increased investment in script development, training, and creative mentorship to sustain the industry’s growth.

Arinze added that reclaiming authenticity would not only strengthen Nollywood’s identity but also restore global respect for Nigerian cinema.

“We have something powerful our culture, our people, our truth. That’s what we must protect,” he said passionately.

Industry observers agree that Arinze’s warning comes at a crucial time, as streaming platforms and global exposure continue to influence local film production styles.
