Oluwatomisin Oderinde, a prominent actress and producer in the Yoruba movie industry, recently opened up about her encounters with sexual harassment in the film industry. Oderinde, known for her hard work and talent, has produced five movies of her own, making her a respected figure among her peers.
The actress highlighted that sexual harassment primarily occurs with directors and male individuals on set who exploit the vulnerability of young, aspiring actresses seeking fame and recognition. She admitted, “If I say I have never experienced it, I would be lying. However, the harassment I have faced did not occur before getting a role. It happened on set, where a senior actor or crew member would suggest that I sleep in their room overnight. But, I have never been forced into such situations. I speak up firmly against their advances. I have a sharp tongue and can respond with polite insults before leaving the set. I am selective about the locations I choose to work on, which has helped me avoid encounters with people who are desperate and willing to take advantage. I am focusing on my own productions, taking it one step at a time. Although I sometimes work on other people’s projects, it is solely for the purpose of filming, and once it’s over, I go back home. There is no room for misconduct,” said Tomisin.
Speaking about her most recent movie, “OJIJI OKAN,” the mother of two explained, “The movie was written specifically for me by a talented storywriter. It revolves around a character named Wura, whose parents were killed by her supposed brother-in-law. She was intended to marry the younger brother of the person who was hired by her uncle to commit the crime. This situation creates a dilemma for Wura. Will she continue the relationship or not? ‘Ojiji Okan’ is a thrilling movie that explores themes of love, revenge, and the role of destiny in people’s lives.”
In addition to her latest film, Tomisin has produced other notable works such as “Stalker” (2018), “Iso inu eku” (2019), “Fifehanmi” (2021), and “Above the Law” (2021). She has also appeared in numerous productions by other filmmakers.
Having spent nine years in the industry, Tomisin explained that she pursued a career in acting due to her passion. “I have been involved in school plays since my primary and secondary school days. Acting is innate in me. When I was growing up, I expressed my desire to study acting in the university, but my parents objected, and I ended up pursuing a different field. Now, they fully support my decision,” she stated.
Tomisin, who is also involved in other businesses, revealed that veteran actress Sola Sobowale and versatile actor and producer Toyin Aimakhu Adeyemi are the individuals she looks up to within the Yoruba movie industry.
